Phase

You’re in another phase
Like a moon that doesn’t know it’s going around
In a circle embracing the ups and downs
Until you fall squarely asleep

Dizzily the clock spins
Hands across your face like the shadow of a smile
I show you the pages and read every word
And the pictures are yours to keep

I do what I must do because I love you
Though sometimes I can’t take you
I never want to hurt you, never want to break you
I never want these days to end

Sometimes my impatience
Towers with the stature of a monster over you
There’s no greater fright than loss of comfort
So I hold you close through the tears

Someday you’ll transform
And flutter into your own orbit with aplomb
You’ll understand the patterns and trace the map
Of my hand as it’s guiding yours

I do what I must do because I love you
Though sometimes I can’t take you
I never want to hurt you, never want to break you
I never want these days to end.
